Getting to Taronga Zoo Sydney by Ferry

Exploring a zoo nearby the sea!

The purpose of going to a zoo in Australia is to see kangaroos and koala mainly, but I also expected to see some unique creatures since the isolated continent makes it home for many distinct species.

Buying Taronga Zoo Sydney ticket

There are 3 things to keep in mind before buying a ticket (official source here):

  1. Online price is 10% cheaper than gate price so it’s better to book it online.

  2. They don’t accept cash so you’ll need to prepare your credit/debit card.

  3. General Admission tickets are valid for 12 months from date of purchase so you don’t have to go on the exact purchase date.

Going to Taronga zoo from Circular Quay

The easiest way to go to Taronga zoo is to take a ferry (F2) from Circular Quay, Wharf 4. It runs every 30 minutes and takes about 15 minutes to arrive. You don’t have to prepare a ferry ticket in advance. You can just hop on by using your credit/debit/Opal card like taking a regular bus.

Exploring Taronga Zoo

I am not that type of person who likes to check off every animal in a zoo, but I do like to have a structure - to find 5-7 species and roughly plan the route so I won’t consume too much energy and just found out I deviate the direction.

Anyway I am convinced that you don’t need recommendation while exploring a zoo, so I’ll just share some fun facts of some species that I saw and found cute on this post 😄

Silkie Bantam - Have fluffy head

Capybara - The biggest rodent on Earth. Can be found mainly in central/South America and a small population in Florida, the US. Wear down their continuously growing teeth by grazing on plants. o

Koala - Unique to Australia. Not bear at all but more familiar with wombat and kangaroo. Sleep minimum 18 hours/day.

Llama - Relative of the camel. Domestic animals in Andes Mountains. Can carry stuff. Their wool and meat have economic value.

Dingo - Australia’s wild dog. Ancient breed of domestic dog that was introduced to Australia by Asian seafarers about 4,000 years ago.

Southern Cassowary - One of the largest birds on Earth. Can be found in northern Queensland, New Guinea and eastern Indonesia. Can be dangerous.

Red Kangaroo - The largest mammal in Australia. Live in central Australia. Known for powerful legs and pouches which carry their babies.

Red Panda - Categorized as Carnivora but actually eat meat rarely but bamboo and fruits.

Alright, these are what I can share for this zoo post. For the next post, it will be Sydney town activity focused, and I’m sure I have more things to recommend!
