Buenos Aires Bites: 5 Tasty Food & Sightseeing Stops That Saved My Cancelled Patagonia Trip

From historic cafés to surprise empanadas, here’s how one vegetarian traveler turned a change of plans into a delicious Buenos Aires adventure 🍽️🇦🇷

Since my original plan to visit Argentina Patagonia got canceled (article here), I had plenty of time exploring Buenos Aires and discovered yummy food!

Table of Contents

1. Historical cafe - Café Tortoni

The oldest cafe in Buenos Aires founded in 1858 according to their website. I guess tourists are probably attracted to its history and decoration. I viewed this as the counterpart of Confeitaria Colombo in Rio, which is a cafe with nice decoration. As for the food, not sure if it’s because I didn’t order their signature, I only found the food average. But if you just want to experience the elegant vibe, it won’t disappoint you.

It seems you’ll get a cup of water no matter what drink you order

The sandwich I ordered

9 minute walk from Cafe Tortoni. It’s a plaza in front of the iconic pink Presidential Palace and the site of Argentina’s revolution for independence from Spain. It sits at the end of Avenida de Mayo, which is lined with shops and has a strong European vibe. So if you are on the street, take a walk there is a good choice!

3. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yummy Empanada - El Gauchito

13 minute walk from Plaza de Mayo. This is the suspicious food place that the owner claimed to have the best empanadas and I PROVE HIM RIGHT! The context is that I was looking for something to eat after visiting Mercado de San Telmo (I didn’t dine in there since the price tends to be higher), and I walked around the area and the owner came to introduce me their food.

I didn’t take it initially because I was hesitant. After 5 minute research, I found out not having many choices so I turned around and tried. They have 2 - 3 no meet options! The empanadas’s smell, texture and ingredients are all out off expectation. Highly recommended for sure!

My Empanadas - cebolla & queso (onion & cheese)

4. Market with food - Mercado de San Telmo

5 minute walk from El Gauchito, really reminds me of Europe since they often have local markets in areas that are actually complexes of restaurants. In Mercado de San Telmo, they have bars, bakeries and few veggie stalls. The vibe is good, but doesn’t have many vegetarian options, so I didn’t dine in there. BUT! There’s a cafe called CHANTAL Cafe des Delices whose passion fruit cheese cake is sooooo good! (In Buenos Aires, there are many bakeries or cafe selling passion fruit cheese cake, that’s probably why during those days, I was eager to try one ha)

5. Even non-vegetarian has good review - Konu Bar

22 minute bus from Mercado de San Telmo, the food is so good that I must recommend! I’m vegetarian, during my stays in Argentina, I didn’t have many options. Even though I have, sometimes they just didn’t meet the expectations.

But this place? not only do I have many options, and the food itself is actually soooo goood. I ordered BBQ sandwich: the BBQ sauce is fantastic, the veggie is fresh and the bread is decent! (not the same as that kind of poor veggie stuffed in a burger made with low quality bread). The fries are crispy enough too! Highly recommend if you are a vegetarian looking for something fully satisfying your stomach!
